Landscape in Acrylics

By Roopal

Another first at Nayna’s Art Class by Roopal this time, this is the very first acrylic painting ! While for the past two years we have stuck to oils on canvas, Roopal wanted to try something that will allow her to learn painting landscapes in a shorter time span as her household responsibilities will not allow her to continue beyond April.

As you may notice while the general effect of the painting is similar to an oil painting the mountains were treated to a more water colour style of working. Acrylics can be treated either as oils and applied in thick impasto or thinned out and worked like water colours, so we did both! The thick bushes in the foreground were given a more impasto look, with the mountains getting a more fluid look with the sweeping lines of snow.  We also used a lot of white colour for the mountains as opposed to simply leaving the bare canvas , so I guess unless a student specifically wants to work with waters we will remain primarily an oil painting group ! :)
